5 Movies to Watch for Their Aesthetic

Movies are a huge source of inspiration for me, style wise. The first time I saw Moulin Rouge, I was absolutely dumbstruck by the sheer…awesomeness of it all. I watched it three days in a row, like we did as children with Aladdin and Jurassic Park and the Lion King. (Nobody else watched Jurassic Park obsessively? Okay, I was a weird little kid, I can accept that!)

Point being, these are all movies that you should watch, for their visuals if nothing else. Really watch, not watch-while-internet-surfing or watch-while-crocheting!

  1. Moulin Rouge. Big shocker, I know. If you haven’t already seen it, you definitely, definitely should. On the other hand, I can see how it could be considered a bit seizure inducing, but really. Bright colors, Bollywood inspiration, Victoriana fashion…do I need to continue?
  2. Coraline. The colors alone are absolutely delicious, alternately jewel-toned and monochrome. The visuals are exaggerated and creepy at times, in the best way possible, and the animation is amazing.
  3. Serenity. Yummy futuristic steampunkish (spacepunk, maybe?) wardrobes. Firefly has more variety to be sure, but we’re dealing with movies here, not series, so!
  4. The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Pure sequined, corseted, tacky musical fabulousity.
  5. Pan’s Labyrinth. Vintage styles + fairy tale atmosphere + awesome costuming.

What’s your favorite visually inspiring film?

Okay, first off, you are not alone – I also watched Jurassic Park obsessively as a child. Being a strange kid is awesome. ;)

I definitely agree with your choices and have been inspired by some of these myself. I’ll have to check out Serenity, haven’t seen that.

A few good films I’ve been inspired by would be 8 1/2, Eraserhead (or any Lynch really), Mirror Mask (if you haven’t seen it and like Pan’s Labyrinth you might like what it has to offer), of course Marie Antoinette (it is almost gluttonous aesthetically), and then Cabaret, which can always make me want to at least paint my nails metallic teal…

    Thanks for the great post!

I remember being completely blown away by Moulin Rouge when I first saw it at the Cinema, but Baz Luhrmann’s films are always visually stunning.

I agree about Caberet. I would also recommend anything by Tim Burton. Particularly Edward Scissorhands which is amazing for it’s cartoony hyper real feel and Sleepy Hollow is so deliciously dark and monochrome. Even Beetlejuice is fantasticly rich visually.

I love Pan’s Labyrinth, but my favorite movies for their aesthetic aspect is “Legend” with tom Cruise and Mia Sara and “In the Mood for Love” it’s fashion + filmaking gold. Hope all is well with you.

    Much love,

Ciara – so glad I wasn’t the only one ;) I’m a total Neil Gaiman freak so I’ve seen Mirrormask; it only very narrowly didn’t make the list. Cabaret is a good one too, as is Marie Antoinette. Maybe I should have done a list of 10, hmm? I’ll check out 8 1/2 and Eraserhead!

I agree, Retro Chick, Baz Luhrmann knows how to make some eye candy. We should conspire to get him and Tim Burton together on the same project, I’m sure the results would be mindblowing. I’ve never seen Sleepy Hollow, I keep meaning to though.

I’ve never seen either of those, Glendy! I will check them out, thank you! :)

The Fall, definitely! It’s a brilliant movie to start with (storytelling-wise it’s comparable to a much less sugar-coated Big Fish.. and don’t get me wrong, I love Big Fish!) but even if it were terrible the visuals would save it. It helps that Lee Pace is complete and total eye-candy. :)

I DEFINITELY have to see ‘Coraline’ & ‘Serenity’: I’ve always wanted to see those! And actually, I’ve heard amazing things about the aesthetics in ‘Marie Antoinette’ as well, have you seen that?

I always have loved Amelie. Maybe it’s my girlcrush on Audrey Tautou…

Coraline was amazing, but Pan’s Labyrinth was one of the most incredible movies I’ve ever seen. I actually screamed aloud when the eye-palmed monster woke up- shrieked like a little girl…

Claire – I will check out the Fall, for sure! I liked Big Fish, but I did think it was a little sugar coated, so I bet I’ll really like the Fall. Eye candy always helps too ;)

Corrine – Ahhh you have to! Watch Firefly, too, it’s the series that Serenity was based off of. I liked Marie Antoinette style-wise, but I thought it was kind of lacking in story…I tried to focus on films that were good in both areas!

Mary – I’ve actually never seen Amelie! Terrible, I know. It’s in my Netflix queue.

Limespark – I was just talking with Wendy Brandes the other day about how a creepy/awesome tattoo idea would be to get eyes on the palms of your hands and walk around like the hand-man from Pan’s Labyrinth!

The Harry Potter movies had some eccentric characters and styles in there. You had Dumbledore and his ringed fingers, you had Voldemort with his suaveness in black and you had Bellatrix Lestrange with her wild and fabulous afro.

LOVED Coraline and Pan’s Labyrinth. Agreed 100%.
