Apocalypse Ladies: the Valkyries

These Polyvore sets/character sketches will (hopefully, unless my creativity runs dry!) be a semi-regular feature from here on out. These are actually for a story idea I have, but the others probably won’t be. It kind of sucks, because I think the story would work much better in graphic novel/comic format (than just being written), but my drawing skills are extremely rusty and I am SO anal I doubt I’d want to turn it over to anyone else. Which makes it either work on art for an hour a day (or something similar), or write it. Hm. Anyways, without giving away details of the plotline, just assume this is your standard postapocalyptic situation! (Now there’s a phrase you don’t hear every day.) These ladies are part of an all-girl tribe that calls themselves, as you might have guessed, the Valkyries.

fighter/scout

Brynn is your resident scout/warrior type. She wears a leather jacket, a tank tattered by age & exposure to the elements, some tough engineer boots, and shorts with a garter belt underneath to hold up socks if need be. She’s never found without her belt, which provides some handy storage space and loops to hang weapons from.

Shaman

Katla is the tribe shaman. Her prized possession (next to her runes, of course!) is a fox-fur stole that she found while digging through department store rubble. She has a pet cat and is followed everywhere by an enormous half-tamed raven. No one can quite figure out why.

(By the way, if I could afford it, I would own pretty much everything in this set.)

Leader

Kara is the group’s leader. As such, she doesn’t have to go out on scouting missions and thus carries few weapons – though she’s always got her boot-knife and poison ring on her, just in case.

Let me know if you like these & do want them to become a regular feature, and I’ll keep ‘em coming!

i really enjoy this feature, you should definitly do it again. I am particularly interested in reading this story. You should definitly write it (if you aren’t feeling right about the illustration, just collaborate with someone who is). Seriously, I would buy this book (or watch the movie – would make a great screenplay!)

    Hey!
I really like this feature :) , especially because the few times I’ve tried to use polyvore, it’s kind of died on me; I just haven’t gotten the whole collage thing down yet. I will, in the future ^^
But! I think it’s really fun how you can sort of categorize things and tell a little story about it. So…keep it up? :D

GREAT feature! I would love to see more Apocalypse Ladies posts. I love the combination of images/clothing and the little stories.

I’m glad you all like the feature! I’ll definitely keep it up.

Kristen – I decided I’m just going to practice drawing until I get good enough to do it; I did some sketches the other day and I’m not QUITE as rusty as I had thought I was! So with a month or two of everyday practice I should be able to pull it off. :)

  • Kristen says:

Michelle – keep it up… it is so that practice makes perfect or at least makes you a lot more comfortable with your own abilities.
