Developing a Morning Practice

Why have a morning practice? It grounds you and tends to shake off any leftovers from bad dreams, if you may have had them, it starts your day off on a familiar and positive note. A fresh start for a new day.

Some ideas for morning practice, you ask?

  • Meditation is a great one to start with – I would suggest doing it after you get out of bed, so as not to fall back asleep!
  • Yoga – this is my method of choice, as I’ve said before! It has about the same mental effect as meditation, for me, but also has the added benefit of helping physically.
  • Running is another idea. I’ve never been a runner, so this option has less-than-no-appeal to me, but I’ve heard people sing the benefits of running – whatever works for you!
  • Writing morning pages. I’ve never tried this, although it’s supposed to be great for writers. Before reading or writing anything else in the morning, write 3-5 pages – about anything. I hear it’s great for clearing the mind and cleaning the “junk” out of your brain, buuut, like I said, I’ve never tried it.

Do you have a morning practice? Find it useful? Wanna tell me about it?

When I was younger, I’d just wake up and take a quick shower, throw on some clothes and run out the door for my day. As I’ve gotten older ( I sound like I’m elderly, but I’m not) , I realize that a morning practice makes a huge difference in how the rest of my day goes. I want to begin to wake up earlier so that I can put more into my morning practice such as going for a nice, brisk walk or meditating. Great post!

I am working on a morning routine, I feel like it is so necessary! Unfortunately I am always running late for some reason or other, and I barely have time to put myself together before I fly through the door. I really should work on my time management!

I often find myself wishing that I could make myself get up and exercise in the morning. It’s hard enough just to force myself out of bed on time. One day that I stayed home from my day job to work on my own biz recently, I did manage to go for a run first thing in the morning though, and it made me feel energized. The problem is the time that it takes if I’m not on my own schedule though… I can dream that one day when I work totally for myself a morning run will fit in better… but right now I’d have to set the alarm for that much earlier…

I wish I woke up early enough to have a morning practice. Does hitting the alarm clock several times count?

Sheena – No, I know what you mean! It does make such a huge difference that’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it :)

Mallory, Luana, Alicia – I totally get where you’re coming from!! I think pretty much the only reason I can stick with mine is that I pretty much rise whenever I want. If I had to get up any earlier than 8 – which is already nearly ungodly early for me! trying to fix this though – I think the morning routine would probably end up getting scrapped, because I just love sleep THAT much!

I’m normally lucky if I can make it out of bed at all!

Having said that, now I work from home I am trying to get more of a routine in the morning. I’m not naturally a morning person, so instead of trying to force myself out of bed early to work I’m trying to get up, do some Yoga, have my morning coffee and juice in a relaxed atmosphere and then start work at 9:30 or 10am.

My morning practice involves yoga…I usually make breakfast for the kiddo going to school and then spend 10-15 minutes doing sun salutations and gentle stretching. I always try to finish in samasthithi, giving thanks for the many blessings in my life. I’m NOT a morning person at all, so I need something to get me up and going LOL

It may sound vain, but my way to wake up in the morning is doing my makeup. I make it a point to do it, since it requires focus, and also allows for creativity.
