Did you know the earliest reference to April Fools Day is in the Canterbury Tales? I had no idea it went back that far! I also didn’t know that it’s commonplace in the UK for jokes to only be done before noon. And I had no idea that there’s a similar Iranian holiday, called Sizdah Bedar, on the 13th day of the Persian New Year, which falls on April first or second. Sizdah Bedar is most likely the oldest prank tradition holiday in the world – celebrated as far back as 536 BC! Some think it’s the basis for our modern April Fools Day and its variants.
I think a holiday based around being silly is a fabulous idea. Too many of us forget the fine art of being a goofball as we grow up. Aside from the all-too-obvious idea of playing pranks, why don’t you celebrate by telling some terribly corny jokes (What do vegan zombies eat? GRAAAAAAAIIIIIINS), putting on some ridiculous clothing (I recommend a tiara and a tutu), and checking out the list of the Museum of Hoaxes’ top 100 April Fools Day pranks of all time. Have fun!
